Atwater and his collaborators have compiled a comprehensive history of the town and city of New Haven in its first two-and-a-half centuries, incorporating a narrative of municipal history along with topical coverage of all aspects of New Haven society, and about two hundred biographical sketches.

The volume begins with separate narrative histories of the colony of New Haven and the town of New Haven, followed by accounts of its participation in the "War of the Revolution" and the "War of the Rebellion." The narrative section closes with a treatment of New Haven as a city, from its incorporation in 1784 to the centennial in 1884.

This is followed by about three dozen chapters on a wide variety of aspects of town and city life, including churches and clergy, schools and colleges, the law, medicine and the like. These chapters extend to such new features of civic life as "Public Amusements" and "Artificial Illumination."

This volume differs from other similar volumes of the late nineteenth century in that, instead of a single section of biographical sketches, these notices of interesting citizens are placed at the end of the most appropriate topical chapter. So the lawyers and judges are gathered after the chapter on law, and the doctors after the chapter on medicine. The largest grouping is found at the end of the chapter on "Productive Arts," the volume's term for mercantile and industrial activities.

The sections on municipal government, societies and clubs, and military organizations include lengthy lists of officers and members in these organizations.
