This volume provides complete, verbatim transcriptions of the inscriptions on all tombstones for the town of Madison, Connecticut, (formerly a part of the town of Guilford) with dates prior to 1800. These inscriptions were gathered by a number of transcribers, from four cemeteries in the town.

Madison was established in 1826, having been the eastern part of the much older town of Guilford. The Hammonassett cemetery, where burials took place as early as 1652, fell within the portion of Guilford that became Madison. Other cemeteries were created at later dates.

Although there would have been many seventeenth-century burials in these cemeteries, most of the surviving stones covered in this volume are from the eighteenth century. Many of those whose names are on these stones, though, were born in the latter half of the seventeenth century, so these records cover about a century and a half of the town's existence.

Most of the inscriptions are accompanied by genealogical footnotes, providing additional information on the decedents' family connections.
