The first of these volumes collects in one place all surviving vital records for the original town of Boston in the seventeenth century, along with the baptisms from the First Church of Boston. The second volume continues with all surviving Boston birth records for the entire eighteenth century.

The Ninth Report of the Boston Record Commissioners, which comprises nearly fifteen thousand events gathered from a variety of sources and is arranged by year of the event, is essential for research in Boston families of the first half of the colonial period. Most of the entries are civil records of birth. Prior to 1643, these were not recorded contemporaneously with the events, but were brought in to the town clerk all at one time in that year. This process was repeated through the middle of the century for small groupings of years, and only in the latter part of the century was a regular current register maintained. As a result, at least until about 1650, all the births published here for a given year were not always recorded in the year of the event, but may have been handed in to the clerk a decade or more after the birth. Also, because the births were not arranged in strict chronological sequence, the resolution of double-dating for entries in January, February and March is not always possible.

Records of marriages and deaths are much fewer in number. In many years there are no records of either type of event. In 1675 and immediately after this may be explained by the difficulties of King Philip's War, but in other years may be put down simply to poor recordkeeping. Until the last fifteen years or so of the century, marriage in Puritan New England was strictly a civil ceremony, and so any marriages performed until about 1685 would have been by a magistrate, and should be in this volume.

This record also includes baptismal records from the First Church of Boston. As explained in the preface, although other churches were formed in Boston in the seventeenth century, relatively few records of baptism survive from those churches.

The Twenty-fourth Report picks up where the Ninth Report left off in its presentation of the birth records for Boston. For the first half of the century, the surviving records appear to be complete, and comprise nearly three-quarters of the published volume. After 1750, and especially during the Revolutionary years, there are far fewer entries, not because of loss of the record volumes, but because many events were not recorded, a phenomenon common throughout New England during these years. The last few pages of the volume continue some entries for the early years of the nineteenth century, and the final page has a few entries from the first quarter of the eighteenth century which were not printed in their proper place.
