Did you know there were 25 Washington counties in the U.S. in 1881? The father of our country came out on top, but he was closely followed by Jefferson and Franklin, each with 23. Even if we know the name of the place our ancestors came from, finding it can sometimes be difficult. Extinct place names and multiple copies of the same name can both cause problems. This post office directory contains an alphabetical list of every post office (with its county) in existence in the U.S. in 1881. Do you immediately think New York when you hear Albany? What about the other 18 Albanys scattered throughout the U.S.? Your ancestor was born in Barn, Virginia? Canít find it? Try West Virginia. Not sure of the spelling? You can skip directly to an alphabetical list by state.

But thatís just the beginning. Thereís also a list of military posts, garrisons and stations with their post office address. The list of observation stations includes my favorite≠Froze to Death, Montana. National cemeteries, marine barracks and Navy yard as well as life-saving districts and stations and Indian agencies all have their own lists. If it got mail, itís listed. Thereís a plus for the life-saving stations≠the agent is listed. John D. Persons was the keeper for the Thunder Bay Island station near the lighthouse on Lake Huron≠itís postoffice was Alpena, Michigan.

Want to compare today with 1881≠thereís a chart which shows the time of transit of mail between the larger cities throughout the U.S.

Youíll be especially interested in the last section, if your ancestor was a postal employee. It includes the annual report of the Postmaster General (things havenít changed≠they were losing money then too), general instructions to the public and a separate ďSuggestions to the Public,Ē as well as over 100 pages of postal regulations.

Finding an ancestorís place of origin often isnít easy, misspellings, mispronunciations and confusion regarding the location of place names all contribute to the problem but with this handy guide locating it just got easier.
