This turn-of-the-century directory for the city of Portland, Maine, gathers in one place a wide range of residential, occupational, and financial information about the inhabitants of that municipality, combined with additional data on its businesses, civic organizations, and government agencies.

The bulk of the information is arranged in three separate but related sections. First comes what is called in some city directories the "reverse directory," in which all buildings in the city are listed by street and by their order on each street. This listing frequently shows multiple residents at some locations, as well as businesses conducted at those addresses. For each street, the point at which cross-streets intersect is indicated.

The second section contains the usual listing of all city residents in alphabetic order. Each listing gives the name, occupation and residence, and frequently the place at which that resident work, if different from the residence. Deaths are also noted during the year in which the data for the directory was collected (for example, "Gay, Dwight H., engineer, died 1899").

The third main section groups the businesses by type, somewhat like a modern Yellow Pages. Additional appendices give information on city, county, state, and federal governmental agencies, and a wide range of civic institutions, such as libraries, hereditary societies, and service groups.

Cross-referencing of the personal information in the first two main sections allows the researcher to unearth additional useful information, such as the type of business at which a person works as a clerk, or the other individuals who reside at the same location as a person of interest. Furthermore, this information can then be checked against the 1900 Federal census.
