Tracking previously published information on Virginia families can be an arduous task and few would think to consult Memorials of Old Virginia Clerks. Although the title indicates that there is a complete index to names, this refers to the names of the clerks. None of the family members and other individuals mentioned in the text are indexed. Consequently, the ability to conduct an every word search is extremely helpful, since some of the biographies reference numerous family members.
The volume is not complete. Information from burned record counties is limited to what could be determined from either surviving records or individuals in the county. Nor are there biographies for every clerk. The length of service of some clerks (the longest being John Nicholas of Albemarle who served for 66 years) and the tendency for family members to successively succeed each other contributes to some extended biographies. The clerkship of a county was a lucrative post and deputies (often family members) frequently succeeded a resigning clerk. For example, various members of the Pollard family held the office in King William County for 73 years and King and Queen County for 76 years. Goochland, however, holds the record with Henry Wood and son Valentine holding the office for 53 years, and the Millersfather William, son Narcissus W. and grandson William Jr. holding the office for 96 years.
The over 400 pages in the compilation attest to the amount of family information that can be found here. There are also numerous tidbits of county histories scattered throughout the volume. In addition to the Virginia county court clerks some district and circuit court clerks are listed and biographies for some of the clerks from the West Virginia counties of Greenbrier and Jefferson are included.
