This two-volume set should be a part of any New Jersey researcher's library. Gordon's history of New Jersey presents a detailed description of the colonial New Jersey history and government describing the various government entities and jurisdictions and presenting a chronological description of both those governing the various parts of the colony and the impact this had on the settlement of the area. Citations to other histories and documents present opportunities for further study. This volume serves both the reader new to New Jersey history as well as those interested in specific information about an event. While the first volume is useful it is the second that is the real jewel of the collection. Titled a gazetteer, part one delivers the expected general description of boundaries, political and geographical divisions and geography as well as a description of the turnpikes, railroads and canals. Part two is the unexpected jewel. It provides a "Moral View of the State" and contains a description of the legislative, executive and judicial branches of the government. Among other items covered is a detailed description of the tax structure-what is taxed and how it is collected; how the poor system works including the notation that grandparents and children are responsible for indigent individuals; how roads are established and maintained, the militia system, how the courts work including which court is responsible for what type of actions and details such as the fact that executions cannot be issued on women when the debt is under two dollars, The discussion also covers the major religious denominations-Presbyterian, Baptist, Methodist, Episcopal, Reformed Dutch and Quakers and in most instances provides a list of churches and their ministers. Literary institutions, common schools and newspapers are also covered. Part three provides an alphabetical list of places including, in many instances, very detailed information; for example, we learn that while there are 7 taverns and 9 stores in the Elizabethtown (the first English settlement made in the state), none of them sell ardent spirits. In 1832 there were 470 dwellings, 550 taxables, 83 single men and 289 horses and mules, two libraries, a newspaper, the New Jersey Journal, two large oil-cloth manufacturers and a flax works among other industries. The description continues for two pages. Other descriptions while not so lengthy contain valuable information as the one for Stephens Creek shows "Stephen's Creek, Weymouth t-ship, Gloucester co., tributary of Great Egg Harbour river, having an easterly course of 8 or 9 miles. Two miles from its mouth, is a village and post-town which bears its name; 39 miles S. E. from Woodbury, 78 from Trenton, and 106 N. E. from W. C. It contains a grist and saw mill, tavern, store, and 6 or 8 dwellings." These two volumes are rich in the background detail of history and government function that is so often difficult to find.
