Compressing over 300 years of history into a small volume, while at the same time making it interesting to school children is an arduous task. This textbook, published in 1898, does an admirable job of pulling together in a readable format, the major events in Virginia’s history. Among items of special interest are the three chronological tables of important events that follow the three sections of the book—14921763, 17631860 and 18601898. There is also a list of the 52 colonial governors giving the date they took office and indicating whether they were a lieutenant governor. The list of 48 Commonwealth governors includes their political affiliation and the date and place of their birth and death. A large colored map of Virginia showing the counties and county seats as well as major roads and rivers is another useful tool. While neither the section for the Revolutionary War nor the Civil War provides extensive coverage of Virginia’s engagements, they provide a quick overview of the major battles and individuals involved. The Battle of King’s Mountain, Harpers Ferry and the Richmond theatre fire as well as portraits of individuals who impacted Virginia’s history are among the numerous illustrations scattered throughout the volume.
