Published just 35 years after the establishment of the United States, this interesting volume, which draws heavily from legislative and court records, provides an early perspective on the pre-history of not only colonial Maryland but of the other American colonies as well. The title notes that a copious introduction is included-and indeed it is-comprised of nine sections covering the period from Columbus's discoveries in 1492 to the earliest settlements in Virginia and New York. This is an expansive pre-history which includes French, Portuguese and Spanish as well as English voyages of discovery from Cabot to de Soto and which also details early settlement attempts from Newfoundland to Florida. The last two sections focus on the Reformation and its impact upon the Roman Catholic church and the political changes in England which eventually led to the establishment Calvert's Maryland colony.

Of interest to both Maryland and Virginia researchers is the description of Claiborne's abortive attempts to claim Kent Island. While Bozman's prehistory focuses on the events that led to the settlement of Maryland, the history of the first three years, which is covered in the remaining portion of the volume, focuses, in addition to Claiborne, on the early government and the impact of land policies. The discussion of the development of the early government draws heavily from historical documents and includes commentary upon the differences between the practices in Maryland and those in England. The refusal of the Maryland assembly to accept the Lord Proprietor's laws is also discussed. The last forty pages contain some twenty notes which discuss in detail various points in the text. These notes range from commentary on religious persecution to the application of English land laws in Maryland. Although written in the style of most early 19th century histories, the numerous references to specific documents provides the student of early Maryland history with a number of useful resources as well as a detailed description of the events that shaped the beginning of the Colony.
