Tracking the establishment of parishes and churches in order to determine where to look for records can often be a frustrating experience. Published in 1923, this history of the establishment of the Church of England in Maryland provides a list of the 21 churches established prior to 1691, a list of the counties with their parishes as established in 1692/3 and a list of the churches and their parishes as they existed in 1922. It also includes a description of each of the ten Maryland counties established prior to 1792 giving the derivation of the county name, the date of establishment, boundaries and alterations, a list of the hundreds in the county, a chronology of where court was held, the names and descriptions of the parishes, a list of the first vestrymen in each parish and a description of the early churches and ministers.

Also included is a brief history of the early establishment of religious toleration and the events that lead to the establishment of the Church of England as the official church in 1792. There are over 50 illustrations of early churches and the text of a number of early documents dealing with the Church of England. The one of most interest is probably the 1702 “Act for the Establishment of Religious Worship in this Province According to the Church of England and for the Maintenance of Ministers” which provides detailed instructions regarding how the various functions of the church and parish vestry are to be conducted. These instructions can be assumed, since they were approved in England, to be the “way things worked” at that time and should be, with possible minor modifications, applicable to how the Church of England functioned in other areas of Colonial America.

The index is subdivided into Names, Counties, Court Houses, Hundreds, Parishes, Churches, Geographical Names and Miscellaneous. Although the miscellaneous or subject index appears to be reasonably complete, all of the geographical topics are not; however, reference to specific topics and to lists such as those at the end of the volume provide a somewhat convoluted access to most geographic names. Thus the ability to search for individual words provided by this PDF version enhances access to the information.
