=== New Releases ==============================

The following new title are now available on our web store:

BLACK'S LAW DICTIONARY, First Edition ("A Dictionary of Law
Containing Definitions of the Terms and Phrases of American
and English Jurisprudence, Ancient and Modern") by Henry
Campbell Black, M.A., 1891. US0211, $29.95.  Also includes a
free copy of the Second Edition (1910)!

Every genealogist, regardless of their time and place of
interest, must have a copy of Black’s Law Dictionary in their
library. Legal terminology differs from place to place and
time to time, and successful genealogical research depends on
the clear understanding of this changing terminology.

The publishers of Black’s Law Dictionary are now producing
their eighth edition, and the newer editions have added
information on the developments in the law in recent decades.
But for genealogists the earlier editions retain their value,
since they have a higher proportion of information on older
law, especially the English feudal law, which is essential
for the interpretation of documents from the American
colonial period and from the England that the colonists left.

While these volumes contain just the sort of legal verbiage
that one would expect, there are many other reasons for
consulting these volumes. Terms from legal Latin and legal
French are included, as well as words and phrases from
Scottish and Welsh law. There are dozens of Latin and French
terms of kinship, which appear in older wills and lawsuits.
There are definitions from the lexicon of agriculture, such
as “treet,” meaning fine wheat, and “tremesium,” meaning the
season or time of sowing summer corn. And much more.

In the second edition, also included here, Black included
more citations to law reports and case law, in support of his
definitions, and also added many more terms of medical
jurisprudence.

DUNGLISON'S MEDICAL DICTIONARY ("Medical Lexicon. A
Dictionary of Medical Science") by Robley Dunglison, M.D.,
1865.  US0226, $19.95.

This compendious volume is far more than a dictionary,
providing a wide range of medical information as it was known
at the end of the Civil War. The author has added much to
this second edition of his work, and has designed it to be “A
French As Well As An English Medical Lexicon.”

There are many areas of terminology included here, included
anatomy, chemistry, herbal medicine, pharmacology, and many
more. Latin and French forms of many words are given, and
Latin and Greek etymologies are also frequent. There are also
unexpected data sets dispersed through the volume in their
proper alphabetic place, such as spas and health resorts,
both in Europe and in the United States, or the terminology
used in various magical systems of healing.

Many of the medicines and medical conditions covered by this
volume have multiple names, sometimes dozens, in England,
French and Latin. Each of these names appears in its proper
place in the alphabet, with a cross-reference to the
appropriate main entry, where one finds not only the
definition but a complete compilation of all the variant
names. This feature especially will be very helpful in
understanding causes of death as they may be entered in
various public and private records.

In many instances, the entries carry on for a page or more,
providing information that one would expect to find in an
encyclopedia rather than a dictionary. For example, the entry
for “Artery” covers a page and a half, while the entry for
“Cinchona” and its derivatives spans more than a page and
describes the many types and uses of the bark of this tree.

"OLD CHURCHES, MINISTERS AND FAMILIES OF VIRGINIA" by Bishop
[William] Meade, 1857.  US0236, $27.95.

This history of the Episcopal Church in Virginia focusses on
a narrative of each parish in the state, with biographical
and genealogical details on many of the early ministers and
prominent members of that church. Complete transcripts of
many colonial documents are included for most of the
parishes.

Like so many other nineteenth-century antiquaries, Bishop
Meade conducted his research through a combination of onsite
visits and correspondence with other antiquaries. In the
preparation of this history, which was first published as a
series of eighty newspaper articles, he attempted to locate
and examine the surviving vestry books for each parish. In
some cases he saw these records himself, and in other
instances he relied on reports by others.

Most of the articles have sprinkled through them extensive
extracts and abstracts from colonial documents, including, in
addition to the vestry books, such sources as court records,
private letters and monumental inscriptions. Many of these
records had not previously been published, and, although many
have since been placed in print in more modern and
comprehensive editions, there are undoubtedly records here,
especially among the letters and inscriptions, which have not
been published elsewhere and which have subsequently been
lost or destroyed.

Most of the genealogical material is presented in long
footnotes. Although this material is not documented according
to modern standards, the author would often have obtained the
information from family members born in the late eighteenth
or early nineteenth centuries, who were in a position to
provide reliable data on the more recent generations. These
genealogies will provide solid clues for further research.

"HISTORICAL AND GENEALOGICAL MISCELLANY: Data Relating to the
Settlement and Settlers of New York and New Jersey" (Volumes
I and II) and "HISTORICAL AND GENEALOGICAL MISCELLANY: Early
Settlers of New Jersey and their Descendants" (Volumes III,
IV and V), by John E. Stillwell, M.D., 1903-1932.  US0209,
$24.95.

These five volumes, two providing a wide range of colonial
source material and three presenting compiled genealogies,
constitute at the same time an essential reference work for
Monmouth County, New Jersey, and an important broader source
for the early years of New Jersey, New York and New England.

The author began the work as a study of the Stillwell family,
but soon discovered that he needed to broaden his research to
many related and associated families, and so ended up with a
collection of materials on many records and families of
Monmouth County. He also went beyond this to include data on
these same families in their earlier residences in New York
and New England. Many of the early residents of the county
came from Long Island and Rhode Island.

The bulk of the material in the first two volumes consists of
transcripts of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century church
records, town records and land records for Monmouth County,
New Jersey, and for its two earliest towns, Shrewsbury and
Middletown. There are in addition court records from Staten
Island, from the West Riding of Yorkshire on Long Island
(covering what are now Staten Island and Kings County), from
Burlington County, New Jersey, and from Cape May, New Jersey.
There are also church and census records from Staten Island.

In the final three volumes of the set, Stillwell sets forth
compiled genealogies for about fifty Monmouth County
families. In most cases he provides details on the arrival of
the families in North America, and their earlier history
before coming to New Jersey. Especially in the early
generations, these sketches have much biographical material,
in most instances supported by extracts from or references to
contemporary source material. In some instances there are
even extracts from English records, giving the origins of
some families before arriving in the New World.

=== 2006 Genealogy Conference and Cruise ============

The following announcement was made by Wholly Genes Software
less than three weeks ago and it is already more than 70%
sold out.  All of the staff of Archive CD Books USA will be
attending the cruise and will offer door prizes and other
gifts.  We hope to see you there!

2006 GENEALOGY CONFERENCE AND CRUISE, November 11-18, 2006
You're invited to join us on a grand adventure, an
educational experience, and a fun-filled voyage through the
Mexican Riviera while we learn about genealogical research
methods, tools, and technologies from some of the most
popular speakers and authorities in those fields. Last year's
event was sold out and the conference and cruise were a great
success!

Again this year, we are proud to offer a first-class lineup
of speakers and at least 12 hours of lectures on a wide
variety of topics that are relevent to every family history
researcher. Users of The Master Genealogist (TMG) (or other
interested researchers) will have access to at least an
additional 8 hours of instruction that is specific to that
software and its companion products.

Best of all, the conference will be conducted on a 7-night
cruise which visits such exotic Mexican ports of call as
Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, and Cabo San Lucas. All lectures
are scheduled while the ship is at sea so that you can spend
the days at port relaxing on exotic beaches, visiting Mayan
ruins, snorkling, swimming with the dolphins, or
participating in any number of other optional guided shore
excursions.

What better environment could there be to enhance your
research skills while soaking up the sun and enjoying a
relaxing week-long vacation?

long list of professional genealogists and expert software
users.

There will be door prizes and other surprises too!

Your spouse isn't interested in genealogy? That's OK. While
you learn how to be a better researcher, your spouse will be
pampered at poolside, at the spa, in the casino, in the
sports facilities, or at the many other types of on-board
entertainment. Then spend the evenings together dancing under
the stars, watching a Broadway-type theater show, or relaxing
in one of the many restaurants and lounges. Then on port
days, you'll share a memorable vacation together at the
exotic ports of Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, and Cabo San
Lucas.

At prices starting at just $825 per person (including
lodging, food, port fees and taxes, and attendance to all
conference lectures), it will probably cost less than a week
at your local Holiday Inn -- but it will be much more fun!
Space is limited so don't delay in making your reservation.

itinerary, and cabin pricing, please visit:
