=== New U.S. Releases =========================
RECORDS AND FILES OF THE QUARTERLY COURTS OF ESSEX COUNTY
MASSACHUSETTS, 1636-1683, 1911-1921.
These volumes contain transcripts or extracts from the record
books and loose papers of all courts that operated in the
area that is now Essex County, Massachusetts, from 1636 to
1683. Nearly every person who resided for any length of time
in Essex County in this period will be found in this set.
In 1636 the Massachusetts Bay General Court established
quarterly courts to be held at several places in the colony,
including Salem and Ipswich. In 1643 the General Court
erected four counties in the colony: Suffolk, Middlesex,
Essex and Norfolk. Essex County included Salem and Ipswich,
and the courts at those places continued as they had since
1636. Norfolk County (not to be confused with the county of
the same name erected in 1793) comprised the towns of
Salisbury, Haverhill, Hampton, Exeter, Dover and Portsmouth.
Quarterly courts were established at Salisbury and Hampton,
and continued until 1679 when New Hampshire was established
as a separate colony, Norfolk County was dissolved, and
Salisbury and Haverhill were absorbed in Essex County. The
last sitting of the Salisbury Court was on 11 November 1679.
The Quarterly Courts had jurisdiction over criminal, civil
and administrative matters, so one will find here records of
prosecution for various crimes, of lawsuits between private
citizens, and of licenses for innkeepers. For most courts
there are lists of the presiding magistrates and for the
grand and petit juries for that court, in many cases
accompanied by the grand jury presentments for the court.
These courts also held probate jurisdiction, and many early
wills, inventories and administration will be found here as
well.
The main body of the text presents the information found in
the record books for each court. Material from the file
papers is included in the footnotes and, where possible,
keyed to the associated entries in the record books. Very
few long-term residents of Essex County escaped mention in
the court records.
Available as a complete set or as separate volumes:

=== New Releases from Canada =====================
LOVELL'S CANADIAN DOMINION DIRECTORY - 1871.
Other than the government's official census this is probably
the most exhaustive single source of information on the
inhabitants of "The Dominion," and the two closely allied but
still independent Provinces of Prince Edward Island and
Newfoundland, in this period. Unlike so many contemporary
directories, it includes people from all "walks" of life so
laborers, farmers, tradesmen, merchants, "professionals,"
military, clergy, politicians, consuls and even
representatives of the Crown all get "equal billing." Also in
the alphabetically arranged lists are businesses and stores,
usually showing the proprietor or manager as well as the
address of the business. This is an essential resource for
anyone researching Eastern and Central Canada in the late
1800's. It is available as a complete set or in separate
geographic sections:

NOVA SCOTIA EASTERN DISTRICT TELEPHONE DIRECTORY 1922.
What is there to say about a Telephone Directory? This one
lists subscribers in the Eastern districts of Nova Scotia
(not including Cape Breton) giving their name, the type of
service, i.e., residence, office, store, etc., and where the
telephone is located. The location may be a place name or -
in larger communities - a street name and number, and, of
course, it gives their telephone number. This directory is as
useful for locating people in 1922 as the modern phone book
is for locating them today.

THE CALL TO ARMS, MONTREAL'S ROLL OF HONOUR.
The slightly over 200 pages of this rare, expensive book are
packed with the names of Montreal citizens who "joined up" or
served the war effort in a civilian capacity. Particularly
unusual is the number of women who are credited in their own
right for their war work.

Margaret W. Morley, DOWN NORTH AND UP ALONG.
Is this just another early 1900's travel book? Well it might
be except for the extraordinary story telling ability of the
author. Margaret was an American who came to Nova Scotia with
a companion, and who traveled the length of the province,
including Cape Breton, recording her impressions of the
surroundings and of some of the people she met. She
illustrates her adventures with 16 beautiful black and white
photographs and three maps.
