Marshall has gathered about a hundred accounts of persons imprisoned during the Civil War on suspicion of plans to fight for the South or conspire against the North. The narratives contain details of the arrest of the suspect, the conditions during imprisonment and the attempts to obtain release. During the Civil War the Constitutional guarantee of habeas corpus was suspended under certain circumstances and many individuals were arrested for varying amounts of time when they were suspected of participating in activities aimed against the North. The accounts gathered here describe the tribulations of many persons caught up in these arrests. In many instances, the arrests resulted in no trials and in the eventual release of the prisoners. Bishop Davenport, A NEW GAZETTEER OR GEOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY OF NORTH AMERICA AND THE WEST INDIES, (1838) 2008.
$12.95 http://www.ArchiveCDBooksUSA.com/find_acdb.mvc?refid=NEWS&p=US0350
Gazetteers can be useful tools providing researchers with the location of long extinct places or descriptions of what still extant places were like at an earlier time. They also frequently contain additional items of interest in the hope of enticing purchases. Davenport's Gazetteer includes lists of current benevolent societies, colleges, theological and medical schools and British slave colonies in the West Indies as well as lists of principle roads with the mileage between towns and routes of steamboats and principle canals and railroads (finished or in progress) giving their length and consequently allowing us to determine whether they might have served as a migration route for our ancestors. This is an expansive pre-history which includes French, Portuguese and Spanish as well as English voyages of discovery from Cabot to de Soto and which also details early settlement attempts from Newfoundland to Florida. $24.95 http://www.ArchiveCDBooksUSA.com/find_acdb.mvc?refid=NEWS&p=US0346-DL
The student of early southwest Virginia history can find no better beginning point than Summers' Annals. The bulk of this over 1000-page compilation focuses on abstracts of court minutes and early surveys which often mention early settlers who left no trace in wills and deeds. Although the stated area covered is the area south of the James River and west of the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Cumberland Gap, court records (Botetourt and Fincastle) include Kentucky until 1777 when Kentucky County was established and southern West Virginia to 1778 when Greenbrier County was established. The records continue to include the southeastern counties of West Virginia that were a part of Montgomery and Wythe counties to 1800; however, it should be noted that there are no extant court minutes for Wythe County for 17911794. Washington County court minutes from the establishment of the county in 1777 to 1787 are also available. (more...)

1899 DIRECTORY OF PORTLAND [MAINE] AND VICINITY, COMPLETE STREET DIRECTORY, MAP OF THE CITY AND VICINITY, (1899) 2008.
$14.95 http://www.ArchiveCDBooksUSA.com/find_acdb.mvc?refid=NEWS&p=US0378-DL
This turn-of-the-century directory for the city of Portland, Maine, gathers in one place a wide range of residential, occupational, and financial information about the inhabitants of that municipality, combined with additional data on its businesses, civic organizations, and government agencies. The bulk of the information is arranged in three separate but related sections. First comes what is called in some city directories the "reverse directory," in which all buildings in the city are listed by street and by their order on each street. This listing frequently shows multiple residents at some locations, as well as businesses conducted at those addresses. For each street, the point at which cross-streets intersect is indicated. F. Johnston, MEMORIALS OF OLD VIRGINIA CLERKS; ARRANGED ALPHABETICALLY BY COUNTIES, WITH COMPLETE INDEX OF NAMES, AND DATES OF SERVICE FROM 1634 TO THE PRESENT TIME, (1888) 2008.
$19.95 http://www.ArchiveCDBooksUSA.com/find_acdb.mvc?refid=NEWS&p=US0380-DL
Tracking previously published information on Virginia families can be an arduous task and few would think to consult Memorials of Old Virginia Clerks. Although the title indicates that there is a complete index to names, this refers to the names of the clerks. None of the family members and other individuals mentioned in the text are indexed. Consequently, the ability to conduct an every word search is extremely helpful, since some of the biographies reference numerous family members. (more...)

$19.95 http://www.ArchiveCDBooksUSA.com/find_acdb.mvc?refid=NEWS&p=US0383-DL
Witches, horse thieves, bank robbers, charlatans-skeletons in the closet of our family tree! Most of us enjoy the occasional "odd" ancestor if they're far enough back in the family tree. But can we document them. Family stories are often questioned and autobiographies no less so. And then there are the fake inheritances (and family trees) that make up those genealogical swindles. McWaters autobiography is filled with fodder for family trees. (more...)
Royall Bascom Smithey, HISTORY OF VIRGINIA, (1898) 2008.
$4.95 http://www.ArchiveCDBooksUSA.com/find_acdb.mvc?refid=NEWS&p=US0389-DL
Compressing over 300 years of history into a small volume, while at the same time making it interesting to school children is an arduous task. This textbook, published in 1898, does an admirable job of pulling together in a readable format, the major events in Virginia's history. Among items of special interest are the three chronological tables of important events that follow the three sections of the book—1492-1763, 1763-1860 and 1860-1898.
John F. Watson, ANNALS AND OCCURRENCES OF NEW YORK CITY AND STATE, IN THE OLDEN TIME; BEING A COLLECTION OF MEMOIRS, ANECDOTES, AND INCIDENTS CONCERNING THE CITY, COUNTRY, AND INHABITANTS..., (1846) 2008.
