Waltham Board of Aldermen, RECORD OF THE WEST PRECINCT OF WATERTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS, 1720 TO 1737-38, (1913) 2008.

These records preserve the details of ecclesiastical business in that part of Watertown which eventually became the town of Waltham, for the years just before the towns separated. The minutes of the precinct meetings document the activities of hundred of men from this part of Watertown and vicinity. The original town of Watertown, settled in 1630, comprised the area now covered by Watertown, Waltham and Weston. Weston, also known as Watertown Farms, was set off as a separate town in 1713. During the following quarter of a century, the remainder of the town of Watertown was divided into two precincts, each precinct having its own church and being responsible for the ecclesiastical affairs of that part of town. The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, one of the earliest quarterly serial publications of this type, was first published by the Pennsylvania Historical Society in 1877. The third five volumes (XI through XV, 1887-1891) are reproduced here with fully-searchable text. (see US0612-A and US0612-B for earlier volumes).

Published in 1907 as volume II of Parish Register Society of Dublin, The Registers of Baptisms, Marriages & Burials in the Collegiate and Cathedral Church of St. Patrick, 1677-1800, was transcribed by the then Dean's Vicar of the Cathedral, C. H. P. Price and edited by J. H. Bernard, the Dean of St. Patrick. Few records from the antiquity of St. Patrick's are now extant and only a few broken Celtic crosses without markings pre-date 1219 when St. Patrick's became a Cathedral. At this time ground was acquired to the south and east of the church for burial and in old records is known as the 'Old Churchyard' or 'Vicars' Bawn'. (more...)

This republication of Letters of Denization & Acts of Naturalization for Aliens in England & Ireland, 1603-1700, was edited by William A. Shaw and published by the Huguenot Society of London in 1911. The first instance of legislatively making a foreigner into an English subject was recorded in 1295, when Elias Daubeny was granted by the grace of King Edward I, the right to be held as an Englishman. Edited by Philip Le Fanu and published as volume 19 of the Publications of the Huguenot Society of London in 1908, the Registers of the French Church of Portarlington is the record of the success of one man in establishing a Huguenot settlement at Portarlington in Co. Laois, Ireland, and a fascinating story it makes. Henri Massue, Marquis de Ruvigny, had represented the Reformed Church of France at the Court of Louis XIV. Following the Edict of Nantes and the death of the Duke of Schomberg, Massue became the recognised leader of refugees in England and Ireland, who had fled religious persecution in Europe. Many of these had joined the armies of William III and after the William's victory in Ireland, were demobilised on pensions. (more...)
SLATER'S ROYAL NATIONAL AND COMMERICAL DIRECTORY OF IRELAND, 1870.

Slater's Royal National Directory of Ireland was published in Manchester and London in 1870 and encompasses almost 1,200 pages of text and more than 120,000 names. Information contained in the Directory is subdivided into provinces and further subdivided into counties with entire sections given over to the cities of Belfast and Dublin. Each county and city is introduced by a brief social and political history as well as topographical and geographical descriptions. For those familiar with the study of Irish history and in particular Irish genealogy, directories such as Slater's are a vital research tool. The principal value of Slater's Royal National Directory of Ireland for 1870 lies in the fact that only a handful of truly national Irish directories are available. (more...)

This publication details those eligible to vote in Ireland after the electorate had been greatly increased following the Great Reform Act of 1832. With over 70,000 names, with details of occupations, addresses and entitlement criteria to vote, this publication is one of the great untapped resources for the study of the Irish electorate in the 1830s. The Select Committee that Reported on electorate also sat and took evidence in the aftermath of Daniel O'Connell's election to Parliament when there had been widespread accusations of corruption and illegal voting, especially against the Liberal Candidates. Newgate was a prison in London, at the corner of Newgate Street and Old Bailey just inside the City of London. It was extended and rebuilt many times, and remained in use for over 700 years, from 1188 to 1902. Chronicles of Crime or the New Newgate Calendar is a record of the more notorious criminals confined at Newgate. The New Newgate Calendar was first published in 1773, and has continued over the years with numerous compilers. In 1886, Camden Pelham published this two volume set which contains "a series of memoirs and anecdotes of notorious characters who have outraged the laws of Great Britain from the earliest period to the present time". The full title is "The General Almanack of Scotland and British Register, for 1810, being the second after bissextile, or leap year. Containing an improved kalendar, with the usual lists, and those of Glasgow, Greenock, Paisley &c." This small but rare book contains varied information such as: taxes, carriers, principal roads, stage coaches from Edinburgh, post towns and their postmasters. Also, the peerage of Scotland, courts, magistrates, clergy, Sovereigns and Princes of Europe, and the House of Commons. There is a section on the Peerage of Ireland, as well as details of Scots stationed in the East Indies, and in the Royal Navy and Army. (more...)

Published in Sydney in 1886-88, the enormous, multi-volume 'Picturesque Atlas of Australia' was an attempt with words and pictures to describe the Australia of the time. Its publication was one of the most significant cultural projects in 19th-century Australia. Writers, artists, academics, and politicians came together to prepare a book of unprecedented grandeur and ambition, and a publishing company was established to publish it. The 1100+ engravings on steel and wood contained in the Picturesque Atlas were among the finest engravings to be found anywhere in the world at this time, and many of the illustrations were specially commissioned works by leading Australian artists of the era, for the publication. This classic work was first issued in 1887 with 130 individual biographies of prominent Australians. It has since been released at least twice in 'improved' versions. This CD-ROM contains three known variants of it. Biographies from these three editions have been consolidated into one file and arranged in alphabetical order, totaling 149 in all. The original volumes did not have page numbers, but page numbers have been added for convenience. Title and contents pages from the three editions are included here but the date and order of each edition is uncertain. Each biography is several pages long, and includes a portrait sketch of the individual. You will find military officers and parliamentarians amongst others here. (more...)

The Darling Downs is a region in Queensland, where the principal town is Toowoomba. This 1900 edition of the Darling Downs Almanac and Directory contains a wealth of information relating to this region. Starting with the almanac, this contains a gardening section which is useful not only for the regular gardener, but also the amateur giving practical advice. There are hints to farmers, as well as domestic hints and recipes, times for arrival and despatch of mail, government departments, stations and their post towns, and various miscellaneous information such as directions for making a will, treatment of snake bites, typhoid fever and its treatment, and more.
